Today we had to put my father’s cat Oreo down.
She was never the most healthy cat, on account she was seriously fat. However, after my father passed away she deteriorated fast. She was going blind in the one eye she had, she could barely walk and she could no longer clean herself. We took her to the vet last week and they said it would probably be best if we did put her down since she isn’t getting any better and her quality of life is deteriorating. So, today we decided to put her down. We picked her up from my aunt and uncles place (they were taking care of her since my retarded ex-step mother couldn’t take care of her) and took her to the vet. As I drove there I could see my mother in the backseat crying as she pet the cat. If my heart wasn’t broken enough seeing my mother so emotionally distraught just tore my heart out completely. When we got to the vet we sat in the little private waiting room so we could say our goodbyes and whatnot. After about 5 min they took us to the back where they do this and we stood there with her as they shaved the patch of fur off her leg and injected her with the overdose of anesthesia. She went fast…it was almost instantaneous ( I have had one other experience with being in the room while they put an animal down and it wasn’t nearly as fast). It was almost like she knew it was time to go. She didn’t whine at all on the car ride there. She didn’t freak out when we took her into the vet. She barely even freaked out when they were holding her down in order to complete the euthanasia. My mom cried. I cried. It was just sad. She was a silly one-eyed cat. I loved her so much growing up. It was 16 yrs ago that my dad woke up to see this kitten just being born on his pillow beside his head (we didn’t know our cat was pregnant and Oreo was the only kitten in the litter). She was the cutest, sweetest little rollie pollie cat I had ever seen. I will miss her greatly.
